About Jamie Hark:
My first maps date back to my time as a child, doodling ideas for golf courses and parks with crayon. From an early age I became obsessed with cartography, collecting maps that told the story of the places I’ve been and helping me realize locales around the globe. Studying Geographical Information Systems in Washington, D.C. I saw the power of digital map creation and its role in understanding systems and patterns by utilizing complex data sets. However my eyes soon became tired of staring at computer screens and I soon began approaching maps with a more personal and creative approach.
Living in Boulder, Colorado I began drawing maps that would guide me on my various hiking trips out in the wilderness. These simple drawings evolved into pieces of art that told the stories of my adventures and helped me to plan new ones. Tapping into their narrative potential, I began making maps for friends and family as gifts, and soon started taking commissions to recount people’s adventures through creative cartography.
Since moving to Maine, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know the Portland community as a Tasting Room Ambassador at Rising Tide. Outside of work I have loved exploring this wonderful state, making maps along the way to narrate my adventures. While I am excited to return to school next year for Landscape Architecture, I intend to make these maps for the rest of my life. This collection will serve as a reminder of my wonderful time in Portland.
